Distance learning is becoming more and more popular with the arrival of the internet and correspondence courses. In the future, it will replace traditional universities.
To what extent do you agree with this statement?
It is true that distance learning will be more widely used by students in the future. However, it is unlikely to fully take the place of old-fashioned universities.
Distance learning will become more popular because it offers convenience and cost savings to students who may not be able to attend an academic course. For example, it is particularly convenient for mothers of young children or people who live in remote areas. These people can study at times which suit them, which could be any time of day or night. With regard to financial considerations, studying at home provides an additional benefit as the typical student saves considerably on transport and accommodation costs. Another financial benefit is that in many cases, the student can continue his full-time job and do his academic work in his free time in the evenings and at the weekend.
However, although learning from a distance is certain to increase in popularity, it will never completely replace universities, for reasons related to its unsuitability for certain courses, and to the preference of the students themselves. With regard to the former, the distance learning model is not appropriate for some courses, the best examples of which are those which involve practical skills such as medicine and dentistry. Another reason for the continuing popularity of traditional universities is that students benefit from the academic environment and the opportunity to socialise and collaborate with their peers. For this reason, most students who have the choice will continue to prefer to attend a course in person.
In conclusion, although distance learning will continue to increase in popularity, traditional universities are likely to remain the main source of tertiary education for the foreseeable future.
