　　History refers to all the things that happened in the past, especially the political, social, or economic development of a nation. There has been discussion about whether it is worthwhile or not to spend time learning history.

　　Undoubtedly, the present is the continuation of the past and therefore studying what happened long time ago enables us to better understand what is going on around us. In other words, if we are equipped with relevant knowledge of history, it will be easier for us to understand the evolution of mankind. For example, it tells us how we progressed and reached where we are today. We can also know how technology developed step by step. In addition, history can serve us as a guide, because of which we do not repeat the same mistakes. We also get inspiration from the great men of the past through history.

　　On the other hand, those paying no attention to the study of history argue that the past is very different from the present and we cannot apply that knowledge to today's life. For example, they say that the French Revolution and the fight for freedom of India do not need researching because those situations would never arise again. The argument against the study of history also involves the fact that history has nothing to do with modern professions such as IT engineering and genetic science, knowledge of which can hardly be learnt from the history of half a century ago.

　　In my opinion, looking back to the past is sometimes meaningless, but in most cases and for most people studying history can not only deepen and widen our knowledge but also help us develop the power of analysis. Thus, we are able to look at what is happening at present from a historical perspective and better understanding.
