Juvenile delinquency has seen a worrying rise in recent years in many countries. Some experts suggest that the teenagers who commit serious crimes should be punished in the same way as adult offenders. Personally, I completely disagree with this opinion.

While it is undeniable that juvenile criminals having committed a felony should be strictly penalized, locking them up in prison for decades or even lifetime would not have desired results. This is because the motivation behind their dangerous and serious behavior is mostly curiosity or peer pressure, meaning that they are very likely to be remolded into law-abiding citizens through educational methods rather than being painfully punished. For example, if a 14-year-old boy engage in gang activities, such as drug possession and dealing, what is better for him is courted-ordered community service rather than ten year's sentence in jail.

Another reason why I strongly believe that underage criminals should receive lenient punishment is that they are at a critically important stage of life where they should be given the chance to acquire basic skills and knowledge through education. If they were charged as adults and faced up to 20 years behind bars, their illiteracy and lack of job-related skills would make them a burden to their society and local community after being released. Therefore, even teenage murderers should be allowed to receive education while serving their sentence in prison instead of being forced to do labour work like their adult counterparts.

In conclusion, I completely disagree that all criminals of severe offences should be punished in the same way. Many factors should be taken into account before the final decision is made.
