Some people think that we can solve environmental problems by living a simple life, while others think that the development of technology plays a more important role. Discuss both views and give your opinion.
One of the gravest problems facing the whole world today is the increasing number of environmental threats. As to the question of how these problems can be solved, I believe that the combination of people living a simpler life and scientists making more breakthroughs is the key.
It is evident that living a less demanding life makes great contributions to combating environmental challenges. For example, if people choose to spend holidays at home reading a classic novel rather than having a trip abroad, they will help reduce greenhouse gases emitted by the flights and vehicles used during their journeys. Similarly, instead of pursuing the latest fashion trend, people who merely purchase the moderate number of clothes and shoes contribute positively to saving the resources used for production and reducing the amount of rubbish.
On the other hand, advances in technology, despite having posed serious threats to the environment, have a crucial role to play in combating existing environmental challenges. Most pollution is caused by using energy obtained from traditional sources and adopting poorly developed techniques, so improvements in environmental conditions can be achieved through inventions and innovations. For example, fossil fuels, considered as the culprit of global warming, have been making way for clean energies, such as solar and hydro power, which has significantly reduced the emissions of greenhouse gases. In addition, the invention of biodegradable plastic is a perfect solution to the growing amount of white pollution which has caused devastating damages to the earth.
I would again suggest that both individuals and scientific research institutes should assume equal responsibility for creating a safe and healthy world with less pollution and contamination.
