Task2: Some people think governments should build more train and subway lines to reduce traffic congestion. Others think building more and wider roads is better. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
One of the gravest problems faced by most cities is traffic congestion. To address this problem, some governments choose to invest in the construction of sophisticated railway systems, while others prefer to increase the number and width of roads.
Advocates of building more train and subway lines believe that a rail-based public transport system plays an effective role in easing the pressure on urban traffic. Their principal argument is that sky or underground trains are not only able to carry far more passengers than private cars or public buses but also allow people to arrive at destinations as scheduled. Such a greater passenger capacity and punctuality mean that more commuters would choose to travel above or under the ground and therefore reduce the possibility of congested roads.
On the other hand, there are two main reasons why some people believe that more and wider roads are the key to tackling the problem associated with traffic congestion. Firstly, with driving lanes becoming broader, more cars and buses can be well accommodated and also there may be fewer traffic accidents, therefore reducing the possibility of road congestion. In addition, an increase in the number of roads allows motorists to have more choices of routes, which could effectively make roads less crowded. For example, the construction of 6 ring roads has significantly relieved the traffic pressure in Beijing.
In my opinion, railways and roads have unique advantages in terms of mitigating traffic congestion, so a combination of both means of transport is an ideal solution to make roads less congested.
