　　International sporting events make an important contribution to international peace. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion?

　　International sporting events are increasingly popular around the world. If nations and peoples come together to compete peacefully in sport, misunderstandings will be less likely, and there will be less risk of war in future. Therefore these events are vital for strengthening world peace.

　　Sports competitions such as the Olympics attract television audiences of hundreds of millions. If people from different countries can see their citizens competing with athletes from other nations, they may learn something about their cultures and traditions. As a result they will realise that peoples have more similarities than differences, and can cooperate harmoniously. For example, if people of different colour and ethnicity win sporting competitions, they will understand that all races are equal.

　　Furthermore, if sportsmen and women compete peacefully and honestly, this will bring nationalities and countries closer. As a result of meeting during an international competition, they may develop friendships which will continue during the rest of their lives. For example, they may join sports clubs in other countries, and invite others to their own teams. They may continue to play sport together in each other's countries, and this provides a good example of cooperation for others to follow.

　　On the other hand, international sporting events are not always harmonious. If spectators see competitors from other countries cheating, this may damage their opinion of that nationality. For example, if one country uses drugs or other methods to win a competition, this may be harmful to his its reputation.

　　Although sporting events can produce problems, in general they have a positive impact. By contributing to international peace and harmony, they help to build a more peaceful world.
