e.g. My girlfriend and I scrimped and saved for a long time to get enough money for our Hainan trip.
tighten my belt 勒紧裤腰带（为了省钱）
keep expenses to a minimum 尽量减少开销
e.g. I needed to tighten my belt and keep my expenses to a minimum in order to buy that car.
on a tight/shoestring budget 没有太多钱、预算很少
e.g. I'm always on a shoestring budget, so no matter what I want to buy, I need to save money for a while.
pay a pretty penny 花很多钱
e.g. I paid a pretty penny for that dress.
