  It has been said that people who read for pleasure can have more  imaginations and better language skills than people who prefer to watching TV. To what extend do you agree or disagree?


  Over time our access to electronic forms of entertainment has become easier and has increased in popularity. Personally, I completely agree with the opinion that reading books encourages creativity and language skills while watching television potentially hampers both abilities.


  The beauty of reading books is that it encourages a reader to form their own opinions and internally visualize events that are described. When anything is described in a book, it helps stimulate the creativity of the reader to help paint a picture. This picture created is a unique and individual experience and this is something watching television cannot accomplish. Although television allows for better understanding through provided sound and visuals, having this extra sensory information provided encourages the watcher to become imaginatively inactive, as all information is already available and seen in the same way by all viewers.


  Reading books also allows a reader to become more skilful in commanding a language. The skills they are able to acquire from reading include a large vocabulary, accurate use of grammar, various writing styles, and sophisticated rhetorical devices. Furthermore, unlike TV programmes, most books, magazines and newspapers are written by authors who are experienced in manipulating words and sentences and are edited by people who are experts in spotting mistakes. This means that readers are exposed to a far more formal and helpful context than TV viewers.


  In conclusion, reading books has been linked with improving the cognitive capacity of the brain and the capacity of creative thinking. It is therefore clear that reading is the superior choice to TV viewing.
