　　Some people suggest that all the money spent in restoring old buildings should be alternatively allotted to support the development of roads and the construction of new houses. In my opinion, only those culturally and historically important old buildings are worth preserving and protecting, while the rest of the money should be budgeted towards providing citizens with improved housing and transport.

　　It is undoubtedly worthwhile to preserve buildings with historic and cultural meanings even at a significant cost. The first reason is that these buildings attract people from all over the world. Whether the feeling is patriotic or exotic, visitors to these meaningful sites can be spiritually satisfied and at the same time make economic contributions to the city with the money they spend on various goods and services. In addition, today's designers may be able to learn from some creatively designed and well erected buildings. For example, a century-old mansion may be a textbook illustrating modern developers how to construct houses that could withstand the fiercest earthquake.

　　However, if a house or tower closely resembles hundreds of other buildings in terms of design and function, then it would be a waste of money to keep it alive. The government instead should consider spending the money on new housing and road development which is significantly beneficial for the improvement in people’s standards of living. For example, if the government is more financially able to provide the poor with affordable apartments, they would have a better living condition. In addition, the problem of traffic congestion could be mitigated to a great extend if the government has more funds to build more and wider roads.
