  1005 国内大作文:

It is not necessary for people to travel to other places to learn about the culture from other people. We can learn as much as from books, films and the Internet. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Rather than traveling to other places far away from home, many people choose to learn about different ways of living through the media, such as films and the internet. In my opinion, while it is true that the media can play a role in educating a person about other ways of life, travelling is still the most effective means of better understanding the world.

I admit that getting acquainted with culture of different places across the world has become incredibly easy with the help of the media. There are thousands of books and magazines, such as Lonely Planet, vividly picturing how people live their daily lives in a city thousands of miles away from the reader. Information about their food tradition and festival celebration can be accessed at almost no cost of time and money. In a similar way, watching movies brings viewers close to a lifestyle totally different from their own. Indian movies, for example, let people know how important singing and dancing is to people of India.

Nevertheless, I would definitely take an international flight to the country if I were interested in its culture and customs because there is far more to experience during a real trip. For example, only after European tourists have had several local meals in China could they command the skills of using chopsticks naturally. In comparison, no matter how many times they have watched BBC documentaries introducing this oriental county, what they can access are no more than words and images.

In conclusion, while the media can help people understand other cultures, it is still not the most effective way. Indeed, I would argue that the most effective and most memorable way is to visit those countries themselves.

  1014 Task2题目:

Some believe the purpose of education is to prepare individuals to be useful to the society, while others say the purpose is to help individuals to achieve personal ambitions. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

Every government allots a considerable proportion of its budget towards making as many citizens as possible have the access to education. However, debate about the purposes of education never seems to end. From my point of view, such an investment is aimed at preparing young people for life, work and citizenship.

From an individual perspective, the primary goal of education has been helping young people find a satisfying job and become independent thinkers. With regard to the former, education can make a significant contribution to career achievements by equipping young people with the knowledge and skills they need to secure a place at a good university, start an internship, and eventually land a decent job. As for the latter, schools can positively contribute to training students’ objective and unbiased way of looking at various issues by exposing them to a wide range of subjects, such as literature, philosophy and history.

On the other hand, as far as the government is concerned, the purpose of prioritizing investment in education is to make young children able and responsible citizens in the future. Having an uneducated population means that a country is bound to be economically and technologically underdeveloped because we are living in a knowledge-based world. Therefore, priority of many governments is to ensure a productive and creative workforce through education. In addition, it is true that receiving education allows people to behave more rationally so that a society with lower crime rate and less violence can be anticipated.

Personally, I think that education is undoubtedly a multipurpose tool which not only empowers individuals to pursue ambitious goals in both life and work but also facilitates major improvements of society.

  1028 Task2题目:

Today, people in many countries can live and work anywhere they want because of improved communication technology and transport. Do you think the advantages outweigh the disadvantages?

One of the advantages of ever improving communication and transportation technologies is that people today are allowed far more freedom to choose to live in the city or town that they like. In my opinion, while this modern development enables people to live a better and easier life, it is likely to have more negative impacts.

It is true that being free to choose where to live and work alleviates people's pressure. This is most evident for those who reside in large cities where residents are faced with various problems. For example, people living in Beijing have long been concerned about the dangerously polluted air as it has been proven to be a highly possible cause of some life-threatening diseases, such as lung cancer. Fortunately, those who are able to do their work through the internet are free from this concern by relocating in an idyllic location without quitting their jobs. In addition, it is not uncommon that many people choose to work in mega cities where salaries are more satisfying but live in towns where living costs are considerably lower. What makes this possible is the rapid development of high speed trains and budge airlines.

However, I believe that these benefits are outweighed by problems. Firstly, excessive reliance on a virtual working environment can be very risky. To be specific, people may fail to perform their daily planning and tasks as a result of technical problems, such as the failure of internet connection or breakdown of their computers. This definitely leads to low work efficiency. Also, a lack of face-to-face communication with colleagues is undoubtedly harmful to problem solving because neither emails nor text messages can precisely deliver one's intentions. Secondly, increased commute time causes people to feel exhausted and sometimes annoyed. If anything unexpected occurs, such as delayed train departure or extremely congested traffic, then the experiencing of traveling across cities and even countries would be so frustrating.

In conclusion, although the freedom of living and working at places people prefer is appealing to almost everyone, I am convinced that such modern privilege has more downsides to consider.

  11.02 Task2题目:

Some people say that governments should spend public money saving disappearing languages, while others believe that would be a waste of money. Discuss both these views and give your opinion. (范文基于前雅思考官Simon的作品修改)

It is true that some minority languages may disappear in the near future. Although it is true that governments could save money by allowing this to happen, I believe that these languages should be protected and preserved.

There are several reasons why saving minority languages could be seen as a waste of money. Firstly, if a language is only spoken by a small number of people, expensive education programmes will be needed to make sure that more people learn it, and the state will have to pay for facilities, teachers and marketing. This money might be better spent on other public services. Secondly, it would be much cheaper and more efficient for countries to have just one language. Governments could cut all kinds of costs related to communicating with each minority group.

Despite the above arguments, many experts believe that governments should try to preserve languages that are less widely spoken. A language is much more than simply a means of communication; it has a vital connection with the cultural identity of the people who speak it. If a language becomes extinct, a whole way of life will disappear with it, and we will lose the rich cultural diversity that makes societies more interesting. By spending money to protect minority languages, governments can also preserve traditions, customs and behaviours that are part of a country’s history.

In conclusion, it may save money in the short term if we allow minority languages to disappear, but in the long term this would have an extremely negative impact on our cultural heritage.
