Eight ways intelligent machines are already in your life

Many people are unsure about exactly what machine learning is. But the reality is that it is already part of everyday life.

A form of artificial intelligence(人工智能的一种形式), it allows computers to learn （让某人做某事=enablesb. /sth. to do sth.） from examples rather than having to follow step-by-step instructions(按照步骤说明).

The Royal Society believes it will have an increasing impact on people's lives and is calling for more research, to ensure the UK makes the most of （充分利用）opportunities.

Machine learning is already powering systems from the seemingly mundane (平凡生活)to the life-changing（人生改变）. Here are just a few examples.

7. In hospitals

Doctors are just starting to consider machine learning to make better diagnoses（做更好的诊断）,for example to spot cancer and eye disease(识别癌症和眼部疾病).

Learning from images that have been labelled by doctors, computers can analyse new pictures of a patient's retina（视网膜）, a skin spot(皮肤斑点),or an image of cells taken under a microscope.

In doing so, they look for visual clues that indicate the presence of medical conditions. 

This type of image recognition system（图像识别系统） is increasingly important in healthcare diagnostics（健康医疗诊断）.

8. In science

Machine learning is also powering scientists' ability to make new discoveries（开展新发现）.

In particle physics（粒子物理学）it has allowed them to find patterns in immense data sets（在大数据库中发现规律/模式） generated from the Large Hadron Collider atCern.

It was instrumental in the discovery of the Higgs Boson, for example, and is now being used to search for"new physics" that no-one has yet imagined.

Similar ideas are being used to search for new medicines(寻找新药物), for example by looking for new small molecules and antibodies（抗体） to fight diseases(抵抗疾病).

What next?

The focus will be on making systems that perform specific tasks well which could therefore be thought of as helpers(助手，助理).

Self-driving cars (自动驾驶汽车) will use machine learning to help avoid accidents.(避免交通事故)

In schools they could track student performance (跟踪学生的表现) and develop personal learning plans（制定个人学习计划）.

They could help us reduce energy usage（减少能源使用） by making better use of resources and improve care （提高（对老人的）照顾/护理）for the elderly by finding more time for meaningful human contact.

In the area of transport, machine learning will power autonomous vehicles（驱动自主驾驶）.

Many industries could turn to algorithms（算数） to increase productivity（提高生产力）. Financial services could become increasingly automated and law firms may use machine learning to carry out basic research.

Routine tasks will be done faster, challenging business models that rely on charging hourly rates.

Over the next 10 years machine learning technologies will increasingly be part of our lives, transforming the way we work and live.
