We are all used to buying goods that originate from abroad（购买来自国外的产品）, toys from China, cars from Germany or clothes from India.
We don't hear too much about the environmental impacts of such imports(进口的环境影响), but we do hear a lot about food which is produced overseas.
Indeed, the terms "food miles"(食物里程) was coined（杜撰） in order to convey to the general public that an awful lot of food travels an awful long way before it finally reaches our mouths.
Perhaps, most people support local food as they relate food miles with (以与……联想) environmental damage（环境损害）.
Typically, attention concentrates on （专注于）the greenhouse gases that are emitted by the vehicles which transport the food, by the trucks or aeroplanes.
So for many environmentally aware consumers(有环保意识的消费者), it is the desire to reduce greenhouse gas emissions（温室气体排放） which drives them to buy local food. （drive sb. to do sth. 促使某人做某事）
