Why does this woman think she is ugly?

She says getting a diagnosis of (诊断) BDDBody Dysmorphic Disorder 躯体变形障碍)  is difficult because there is such little awareness of (很少有人知道) the disorder - but also because sufferers(受害者) are so ashamed of their appearance that they won't talk openly.

This led Alanah to become very isolated (lead sb to do sth. 使得…), and it was devastating(令人震惊的) fo rher mother to observe the change in her character.

"We all end up worrying quite a lot more aboutendup doing sth. 最终会 how we look in our teens, but specifically BDD separates itself out from everyday concerns [in that](因为,由于) the person would have to be preoccupied with (一心想着) their appearance for at least an hour a day," he says.

"It has to cause significant levels of distress( 深深的痛苦)- suchas high levels of anxiety, high levels of shame or depression(沮丧) - andit also has to be bad enough to interfere with(干扰) the person's functioning."

Social media(社交网络) made Alanah's disorder much worse because she would constantly be comparing herself to others her own age. But Willson says although today's image-obsessed culture (痴迷图像的文化)has changed our behaviour and we now act like mini-celebrities(迷你名人)taking selfies 自拍)instead of looking in a pocket mirror, we cannot pin the blame on (pin the blame on sb. 推脱是某人的责任) social media.

The nature of the disorder means a person thinks they have a physical problem (身体问题) rather than a psychological problem and so they may spend lots of money on makeup or cosmetic surgery(整容手术). But without proper treatment, it can have far more devastating consequences(有更严重的后果,注意consequence前面的修饰词), he says.
